Easing Back Into My Morning Workouts

Getting back to working outSince December, my workouts have been spotty. I hit it hard at the end of 2015 and then took some time off, (other than some ab work), while away for three weeks. When I got back from Florida I was ready to pick up where I left off, but I injured my lower back (I will post about that next week).

I was pretty bummed when I was instructed to not workout for two weeks. But, now I am healed and ready to go.

I have been trying to get back to my 6 a.m. workouts this week, and slowly but surely it’s happening… even if its just some light resistance training in baggy sweats and bare feet.

No matter how early I get up, Holden and Beau always seem to find me. It was cute at first, but I eventually made a rule that they give me my time until 7 a.m., which I think is pretty reasonable. IMG_1157I am also overhauling my eating habits. I am working at keeping our kitchen stocked with quick, yummy and healthy options, plus I am mastering some healthy meals that are simple and don’t take too much work to prepare or clean up afterwards. healthy lunchI am sticking with my plan of not making weight loss my number one goal. I am trying to focus on some other tasks this year and having a healthier routine will just be part of my lifestyle.

Today the elevator was not working at Mia and Everly’s daycare and I had to carry two 25 pound toddlers up two flights of stairs at once, (these stairs were a little too steep for them to manage on their own). By the time I got to their daycare I couldn’t catch my breath.

Next week I plan to increase my intensity and consistency with my exercise. I think I should be sweating a little more than I did this week. It’s been 18 months since I gave birth to my twins and I still feel like I have a postpartum body. I have been pretty relaxed, but I would really like to gain some strength back.

I am really excited to do this for me and to see where 2016 takes me.

35 Moms’ New Year’s Resolutions: Prepare To Be Inspired!

35 MOMS

As I have scrolled though my social media news feeds this past week, I couldn’t help but be inspired by all of the New Year’s resolutions I saw. In fact, I may have borrowed one or two ideas!

A few common themes stood out for me, especially coming from moms: self care, more patience, weight loss, to thrive, or even just surviving the first year. Some made me laugh, and some brought me to tears. Overall, I think that 2016 should be the year that us moms take the time we deserve for ourselves.

Here are 35 moms’ inspiring New Year’s resolutions…

“To say “me too”. I have a 19 month old and a 4 month old, so I really can’t say ” me first”, but this will be the year that I start paying attention to myself again. So, “me too”, even if there are some days I can only manage 5 minutes of me time. Going along with that is getting my body and mind healthy again, 2 babies 15 months apart really takes a toll and I am ready to feel healthy again.” – Kari (mom to two), Schenectady, NY, US

“Mine is to be more supportive and genuine to my family including my husband and my children. To be more attentive and not just present, but really commited to being involved and interested in what they are telling me. I want to be less critical of others and not as judgemental.” – Carrie (mom of an 11 year-old daughter, 8 year-old son and 9 month old boy/girl twins), Pennsylvania, US

“To cut out sugar and cut my cholesterol numbers. To be strict about it and healthy up.” – Tara (mom of three, ages 5,8 and 12)

“Self care. Time alone, workouts, feeding myself real food, learning to love me again.” – Liz (mom of four, ages 5, 4 and 17 month-old twins)

“Mine is to lose weight, eat better and do what it takes to make myself happy.” – Tonya (mom of 2 year-old daughter and two-year-old twin boys), Minnesota, US

“Stop rushing through life is mine ….same as last year ….hopefully this year I will actually commit to this and stop rushing through everything and stop always being in a hurry.” – Kinga (Mom of two), Ontario, Canada

Elena Gonzalez “To be healthier, friendlier, and a more positive person.” – Elena (mom to seven-month-old daughter), Texas, US

“Get more organized – house and meal prep (especially lunches) & eat healthier! way too much junk food in our house!” – Karen (mom to two, ages 13 and 4)

“1) To love myself and look after me. I spend my time running round after others and I need to have a little bit of me time and stop beating myself up about the little things that don’t matter.
2) Enjoy my girls as much as possible, last year flew by and I don’t want to miss them growing up.
3) Be more active (get back to running)” – Alexa (mom to twin one-year-old girls), Lincoln, England

“My word for this year will be: RESTORE. I will RESTORE my body, I will RESTORE my mind, I will RESTORE my safety, I will RESTORE my relationships, I will RESTORE my drive.” – Stephanie (mom to one-year-old twin girls) You can read more about Stephanie’s goals for 2016 here

“To get out and do more fun things as a family. Also, to lose weight and get in better shape. I really want to be healthy for my girls!” – Jillian (mom to a two-year-old daughter and ten-month-old identical twin girls), Alberta, Canada

“I’m a Mom to be – but i’m counting that as my 2016 goals are with my family in mind. I’m working towards Progress – NOT perfection this year. I’m working towards my goals but will NOT beat myself up if I don’t hit them all – Every ounce of progress I make in health, wealth, wellness etc is all creating a better me for my family without burning myself out and becoming frustrated that I haven’t ‘hit’ my goals.” – Andrea (mom-to-be), Ontario, Canada

“I think my new years resolution is to be easier on myself, as a new mom I’m constantly beating myself up and I need to have more grace..and try to enjoy the time I have with my son because it’s already flying by and I feel like when you’re in it, you never just enjoy it!” – Fiona, (new mom), Ottawa, Ontario

Pushing Myself Out Of My Comfort Zone To Get My Body Back After Four Babies

Mom Of Four Works OutActually, the title of this post should be, Headline: Mom Of Four Tries An Exercise Class For The First Time After Having Twins, Makes An Ass Of Herself And Doesn’t Care! I recently made the decision to up my exercise game. I have been working hard to go from post-pregnancy with twins, to almost back to pre-pregnancy body.Post Pregnancy WeightlossI am fifteen pounds away from my goal weight to be exact, but who’s counting? Me. I typically go by the way my clothes feel and how I feel and avoid the scale. But over the last couple months I was getting a little more lazy each day and treating myself a little more. My body was getting a little softer and my clothes a little tighter. Plus, this cloud of lack of motivation and low grade depression was starting to take residence over my head. I kept waiting for that burst of energy and inspiration to hit me, where the stars align and I just nail the diet and exercise thing. But it wasn’t happening.Standing On ScaleThat’s when I decided to force myself out of my comfort zone, stop waiting and start having fun along the way. I am celebrating and loving my body now. No more punishing and no more waiting. I want to live right now, not tomorrow or the next day.

My motive? First I want to feel better. That means listening to my gut. Literally. I am increasingly aware that certain foods, like garlic, are just not my friend anymore. So instead of going on a weight loss diet, I am going on an eating clean, happy tummy diet. More specifically the FODMAP Diet.

Second, I want to be strong and pain free. I once again threw my back out this week. I have always had a weak core, but four kids, including twins has turned my abs into jello.IMG_6286Third, vanity. HA! You are shocked I am admitting that, right? But I promise I will always be honest with you and I’d be lying if I said I didn’t care how I felt in clothes or in a bathing suit. I feel pretty damn good right now, but I am into celebrating done being pregnant, and it is okay to want to feel pretty. I have given of myself and my body a lot over the past six years and although I have found my path as a mom and blogger, it is time to feel great in my skin again.

So, I am getting out there and trying a variety of new exercise classes, sports and activities. I am a very lazy and uncoordinated person by nature, but I am going to go out into the world and do it anyways. I am going to be documenting all of it and sharing it with you. So, if you were wondering what an exercise class, rock-climbing or pilates is like, I will be trying it out for you. Plus I will not hold back and prove that I am not a secret ninja. Instead include footage of me, very real me, doing my best, but not caring if it isn’t perfect. Hopefully this will inspire you to move out of your comfort zone as well.Mom Of Four Tries ZumbaLast night I went to my first exercise class since having twins. Zumba to be exact, which is an exercise class using a variety of dance moves. I have never tried Zumba before, and I obviously do not have much rhythm. But I had fun and kept my body moving. So without further introduction, here is me trying Zumba:

So, what did I think of Zumba? Very fun, very sweaty and a great exercise. I wasn’t too sore this morning but I can feel it in my thighs. In a good way. This would be great for anyone starting up a new exercise routine. Just don’t be too hard on yourself if you don’t get the moves right away. There is a lot of choreography.

Please let me know if there are any activities you’d like me to try out for you in the comments below!

Thank you to my friends at Oxygen Pilates and Fitness for the fantastic Zumba class!
