6 Ways To Protect Your Family’s Sleep This Summer

Sleeping boyThis is a special guest post by Jamie Contarini

Summer is finally here. Windows are open, kids are playing, bbq is on and bedtimes are creeping later. The later bedtimes happen so easily; what can happen if your little one is going to bed too late every night? You can end up with an overtired baby – and that is no fun for anyone. An overtired child has a harder time falling and staying asleep. Don’t worry though, you can enjoy the summer and keep your little one rested with these tips.

1. Follow your schedule 80% of the time. That’s right, if you protect your baby’s sleep 80% of the time then he will have an easier time adjusting to a nap on the go, or a later bedtime. If you have a fun family picnic coming up, try to protect his sleep the week before you attend.

2. Darken the bedroom. The sun stays up later and is rising earlier. For us that is wonderful, but for our children – it can really cause issues with their sleep. Darkness cues melatonin so darken up that bedroom 30 minutes before it is time to sleep. In the morning, the rising of the sun is enough to convince your little one that it is time to get up – so keep it dark until it really is time to start the day.

Tip: Use garbage bags or bristol board taped to the window frame to make the room nice and dark.

3. Practice a relaxing routine before sleep. If you are out and about in the morning, try to offer at least a 10-minute wind down before naptime and 30 minutes before bedtime. Change your baby, read a book, sing a song, or tell a story.

4. White noise. White noise can help to drown out the noises happening outside. It can mask the neighbour mowing their lawn, or the early morning the birds. Do not play it full volume though, it should be similar to the sound of your bathroom fan and not placed directly beside your baby.

5. Keep it cool. Babies sleep better in cooler temperatures. Keeping the room between 20 and 22 °C is ideal. If the room is warm, consider adding a fan or a ceiling fan for toddlers rooms.

6. Use an early bedtime when needed. If you find your baby is getting up earlier and earlier in the morning, plan on an earlier bedtime. I know, “that sounds backwards” – but by putting your baby to sleep a little earlier will help him get some much needed restorative sleep, and in time, will help him wake a little later.

Remember, you can be flexible with your schedule, just not every night. Everyone needs a little down time to catch up on sleep. Have fun this summer – and take lots of photos!

School’s Out For Summer!

Holden's GradutationIt’s official, Holden has graduated from Kindergarten and summer has officially begun. To be honest, summer makes me a little nervous, especially because I work from home. I have kept Beau in daycare for the summer because she has a blast there, but Holden will be home and he and I are making plans to keep him busy. Holden loves school and routine, so the relaxed summer attitude doesn’t fit perfectly with his personality. That is why we have made lots of plans to stay busy this summer. Other than playing outside, taking day trips to farms and parks, we have a few other tricks up our sleeves.

To start, I have made sure our craft cupboard is stocked. Holden and I have a mutual love for arts and crafts, and this summer, we plan to get our craft on! Thank you to our friends at Parent Club for introducing us to the very awesome Boredom Busters craft books. We are loving the crafts in them that are not only fun and unique, but educational, which will help Holden prepare for grade one during the summer break.Summer CraftsSummer Craft BooksOur next summer adventure; camp! Day camp to be exact. Throughout the summer Holden will be getting to try a variety of summer programs with our friends at Camp Kids Town, here in Milton, Ontario. He will be trying out science, sports and video dance camp. I grew up going to over night camps and working at day camps, so the whole camp experience is so important to our family. Camp Kids TownI will be documenting our summer adventures on Instagram, so be sure to follow along!

Let the summer holidays begin!

This post is sponsored. Thank you to our friends at Parent Club for the Boredom Busters, and More Boredom Busters books. Also a big thanks to our friends at Camp Kids Town for allowing Holden to experience day camp there this summer.

Beat Summer Boredom with Michaels Canada Room Decor Crafts for Kids

Summer break has begun!  Bike riding, swimming, lazing around… but after the initial excitement fades away and the “I’m bored” begins you will need to be ready with your arsenal of activities and crafts.  Being a crafty person myself I was very excited to welcome a Michaels to Milton, Ontario and thought I would have a peek inside to see what kind of summer craft ideas I could find.  What better way to give your kid’s rooms a face lift this summer than to involve them as well and make a summer project out of it!

I found these simple frames on clearance ranging from $2.00 – $5.00.  What a steal!  Pick up a variety of sizes and styles, paint them different bright colours, bejewel them and add some photos of friends.  There you have it, a funky gallery wall.

These solar system kits are not only fun to put together but educational as well.  Get some fishing wire while you are there and hang it as a mobile.  I am definitely picking one up for my son, the little scientist!

Michaels carries a variety of model cars.  A fantastic summer project that will dress up your little man’s shelves.

Grab some colourful baskets and synthetic flowers.  Hot glue the flowers to the baskets to create decor and storage for a girl’s room.

Has Spring Sprung? Nesting Story’s Warm Weather Picks!

Well… we have officially entered into the first week of spring but here in Canada it has snowed all week!  Wait, what is this bright light coming through my windows this morning?  Is it actually sunshine?  My almost vampire children who have been cooped up with cabin fever all winter are more than ready to get outside.  This allusive morning sunshine got me daydreaming about summer which I have to remind myself will eventually come… swimming, cottaging, bike rides… can’t wait!  So I thought this would be the perfect time to share Nesting Story’s picks for summer…. enjoy!

I found quite a few items from I Play, a company that prides itself of constantly finding ways to make baby products healthy for our children and the earth.  I am in love with these lace less rubber shoes that are PVC free from I Play!  A refreshing alternative to my other go to summer shoe, Crocks.  I prefer closed-toe shoes to open toes sandals to protect those little piggys from catching and causing scraped knees.  I Play also carries a great series of sunglasses that come in a soft plastic that won’t break when bent and provide 100% UVA and UVB protection.  I Play has thought of everything, including a built in diaper in their children’s swimwear!

Another great summer must have is Piggy Paint nail polish.  Piggy Paint’s nail polish is non-toxic, kid friendly and odorless.  A perfect loot bag gift idea for a kid’s summer birthday party!

We can’t forget the SPF!  Original Sprout carries a vegan sunscreen that is family friendly and toxin free.  Excellent for baby’s sensitive skin.

If you are planning on spending time at a cottage this summer then you will have to get your wee one a life jacket.  The Salus Nimbus Children’s Vest is designed for comfort so your little one will be happy to keep it on!

Each of the products above can be purchased from Simply Green Baby, either from their online store or in their adorable and green shop located in Oakville, Ontario. Visit www.simplygreenbaby.com for more information.

One more summer pick I had to include was the Appaman children’s sunglasses.  Appaman’s sunglasses are made with 100% Acrylic Frame and UV400 Coated Polycarbonate Lens.  You can find these bad boys at the hippest children’s boutique around… Jet Baby located in Oakville, Ontario.
