Back up seven years in my story to where it all began. I will spare you the intimate details, but I have had many conversations with other women who are thinking about getting pregnant and how overwhelming the whole process is. Here is a little insight into my journey and some additional facts about starting a family. When Mike and I finally got the baby bug after one year of marriage, we thought it would be as easy as trying over the course of a month and… BOOM! Baby! But there is a little more to it than that. Back before kids, I was very type A. So of course when I didn’t get pregnant after two months of trying, I pulled out all of the stops. Other than taking my temperature each day and charting my cycle (I said I was type A), I also used a First Response digital ovulation test kit. It told me when my LH (Luteinising Hormone) surge would occur, and I was able to pinpoint when to try to conceive. That was the month that I found out I was pregnant with Holden.
After Holden, came our first baby girl, Beau. She was a surprise, or as I like to call her: our bad-math-baby. After taking a little break we tried again for a third. But little did we know but we were going to have to be a little more patient this time. I truly think that stress over my career at the time and over-thinking the effort to get pregnant were the culprits. Finally, after receiving some wise advice from a fertility doctor to “stop trying,” I spontaneously became pregnant with twins.I recently had the opportunity to attend an intimate Q & A session with Dr. David Greenburg, hosted by First Response. Dr. Greenburg is an expert in the fertility field and makes frequent appearances on shows such as City Line. At the Q&A session, a group of us discussed the process of getting pregnant and the fact that there is a lot more to it than one might think. Here are some interesting facts that jumped out at me:
Men, to optimize fertility, should avoid wearing briefs, hot tubs, saunas, motorcycles and (insert blush) masturbation and marijuana.
Woman should start prenatal vitamins before getting pregnant, reduce alcohol and caffeine intake and make sure she is on her back when the man ejaculates. Also don’t over-think it if possible!
Get pregnant sooner with FIRST REPONSE®. Introducing the FIRST RESPONSE® Digital 20ct Ovulation Predictor Test. It’s the only ovulation test that actually detects and tracks your personal daily baseline levels of luteinizing hormone (LH) to detect your personal LH surge, unlike other ovulation tests that use a preset “average” level to determine an LH surge. It’s over 99% accurate (at detecting LH surge in laboratory studies), and unmistakable YES+/NO- results are clear and easy to understand: YES+ means try to conceive in the next 24-36 hours; NO- means continue to test daily.
